Szymon Kawalla's conducting gives "Polonia" a monumental quality, reminiscent of Furtwaengler.

Hej, @FearOfFoxbat. This is not about what Wagner think about Poland. This is a story told by music. Polish history. For example in 1,33 signing of the Constitution of May 3 and then partition of Polish.

This is a fantastic piece, one of the best of Wagner's lesser-known repertoire... but my goodness Kawalla takes it WAY too slow in this performance. Thanks for uploading it, though: more people need to hear it.

@AWredny Woody Allen is well known from his unoriginality of thought. His perception of world seems to be limited to some basic banal stereotypes, valid only in America. Hence, we got here another example of simple mathematics Wagner=Hitler. Hitler=Attack Poland. We should be happy that he knows that there is something between Russia and Germany. PS the movie in which he says that listening to Wagner sucks.

... later, great works can be heard here by a skilful listener, whereas Poles can easily find some quotes from Polish patriotic songs. While listening to Wagner's music, it's not necessary to "start getting the urge to conquer Poland"* :) * Woody Allen's quote

After the November Uprising in Poland had been crushed, emigrants and remnants of insurgent teams were travelling to France through Leipzig (Germany). Germans welcomed them like heroes. Young Wagner got to know some Poles then, and in 1832 he took part in Polish emigrants' celebrations of 3rd May anniversary, where he heard some Polish patriotic songs. That's where "Polonia" overture comes from. This work doesn't belong to artist's greatest achievements, but faint announcements of ...

It was performed by the Orchestra of Polish Radio in Kraków; recorded a few years ago by me from a radio transmission.
