TAKING OFF (1971) is Milos Forman's first American film (his next would be the cataclysmic ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST). But the former is a gentle satire of generational disconnect, anchored by humane portrayals by Lynn Carlin and Buck Henry. Parents just don't understand, even though they want to have fun, just like their children. Forman's take on upper class NYC families is about the joy of pleasure, sanctified or not. Another America: Films From a Place Called Home is an ongoing video essay series that examines films about America made by foreign and international directors.
