President Obama was a civilian who never served & was not required to return a salute. Many past presidents were military officers & would understandably return a salute as they had during all their years of duty. As C-in-C US Armed Forces, the president is absolutely permitted to return a salute. When Obama was elected, I didn't expect much but he impressed me more & more as I watched & heard him. Intelligent, articulate & caring. That's what we hope for from our leaders.

I respect the man for returning to the Marine but the appropriate thing to do would be to allow the Marie to render salute again and then return it then shake his hand and apologize. As a Soldier on Base you’re tossing up the Sir Ma’am hiyah all damn day. I’m sure officers get tired of it as much as enlisted do. I’ve had officers look me in my eye holes as I’m saluting them as an E-6 he a Lt Col and not return salute in garrison. I was with a couple of my Soldiers and i stopped him. As to not embarrass him I said excuse me Sir I’m sure it was not intentional but you did not return My or my Soldiers hand salutes to you as we passed just now. As he was turned back towards us I called them to attention and we saluted him like assholes and he returned. Set the example earn the salute. But let some butter bar or major who you can’t see their flash cause of the sun or something and you don’t salute them or it’s just too late and would be weird they will get that salute and your 1SGs name pal 😂 the worst is 1SG, SMG, and CSM. The subdued rank is too damn small. You think I can tell that star from a diamond Sarnt Major ? The one that always got me was a Master Sgt E-8 non 1SG wanting to be called master sergeant. Like come on buddy. We all know you’re on a desk in the supply room let’s not make this awkward hooah Sarnt? 😂
